Teaching pre-professional ballet, jazz, and modern dance since 1980.

Dance is at the core of The Academy of Movement and Music. From Introduction to Ballet up through our Pre-Professional division, our classes offer age-appropriate and developmentally focused work that helps to create skilled young dancers.

BALLET
Our Ballet and Pointe classes build strong technique and introduce students to the major styles of classical ballet  – including the Cecchetti and Vaganova techniques and nomenclature. We begin introducing the great classical ballets to our youngest students in Intro 1 classes and finish with a flourish for our graduating seniors who perform some of the world’s greatest repertory. Students in the upper levels are also offered Contemporary Ballet and when possible, pas de deux.

Focusing on a strong foundation & healthy technique habits.

MODERN
Our Modern Dance classes cover the codified techniques of Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey/Charles Weidman and also include work in improvisation and contemporary dance.
The modern dancer is usually barefoot, and not necessarily turned out as in ballet. Modern Dance has intentionally given in to gravity, uses a more mobile torso and informs movement with the breath as it affects the human body as both a rhythm and a movement affecting the torso.

Keeping up with the new while honoring those who got us here.

JAZZ
Our Jazz classes are age appropriate, beginning with the youngest children dancing to tunes from popular children’s movies and musicals, through the most advanced dancers learning historical, classic and contemporary jazz styles.
Our jazz classes teach basic jazz technique, terminology, and a variety of styles. We emphasize proper technique, alignment and movement quality as we work in class to increase flexibility, strength and confidence.
Classes begin with a warm up, includes traveling across the floor, and combinations to prepare for performances.

Discipline & style combine to create comprehensive and nuanced classes.
